or gamma sitosterol) cause decreases in serum cholesterol. In this study, 15 young men with previous mvocardial infarction were given 12 to 18 Gm./day of beta sitosterol with resultant sustained reductions of serum cholesterol and beta lipoprotein lipid. Lipoprotein lipid fractionation was performed by paper electrophoresis. These changes occurred irrespective of initial serum cholesterol or content of diet. Control observations of the effects of diet, weight maintenance, and the inclusion of placebos brought about increased confidence that the changes were due to the administeredl sitosterol.

Hemodynamic effects of pressures applied to the upper airway during sleep.

The increase in systemic blood pressure after an obstructive apnea is due, in part, to sympathetically mediated vasoconstriction. We questioned whether upper airway (UA) receptors could contribute reflexly to this vasoconstriction. Four unanesthetized dogs were studied during wakefulness and non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep. The dogs breathed via a fenestrated tracheostomy tube sealed around...

Increased propensity for apnea in response to acute elevations in left atrial pressure during sleep in the dog.

Periodic breathing is commonly observed in chronic heart failure (CHF) when pulmonary capillary wedge pressure is abnormally high and there is usually concomitant tachypneic hyperventilation. We hypothesized that acute pulmonary hypertension at pressures encountered in CHF and involving all of the lungs and pulmonary vessels would predispose to apnea/unstable breathing during sleep. We tested t...

Pathophysiology of human ventilatory control.

We review the substantial recent progress made in understanding the underlying mechanisms controlling breathing and the applicability of these findings to selected human diseases. Emphasis is placed on the sites of central respiratory rhythm and pattern generation as well as newly described functions of the carotid chemoreceptors, the integrative nature of the central chemoreceptors, and the in...
